Amidst the chaos of the Trump administration, strong voices of dissent and change are needed. That’s exactly what this US duo from Flagstaff, Arizona, is all about. With their second album, they make an impressive statement with guitar-driven rock, folk and americana. In their nine songs, Ryan Heinsius and Andrew Lauher tell of difficult circumstances in life and how we humans can face them with courage and hope and become more resilient. To do so, they draw on many images of the breathtaking nature of their home, the American Southwest, and the severe sandstorms in Oklahoma in the 1930s that drove its inhabitants to flee to California. Pilcrowe generate incredible power and energy. Rarely it is that there are songs characterized in a similar manner by driving drums, which Lauher masters in all their facets and subtleties in an almost hypnotic way. Overlaying this are Heinsius’ rousing electric guitar riffs, creative acoustic licks, and versatile fingerpicking on instruments built by Lauher. In addition, Heinsius’ high, delicate voice radiates an urgency that immediately calls on you to stand up for yourself. A passionate album that gets you from the very first riff and that one could easily imagine live in a stadium, where it will hopefully reach thousands. This is exactly the music the world needs right now to emphatically counter antidemocratic developments.
